Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Movie to be sold as NFT with additional benefits

Lord of the Rings NFTs are coming, and they’re not the kind of traditional we’d expect. Warner Bros. became Discovery was one of the first major Hollywood studios to start offering movie packages like NFTs.

Decrypt reports that Warner Bros. Discovery launches NFT packages for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring at web3.wb.com. Bundles come with a 4K copy of the 2001 Academy Award-winning movie (an extended edition, of course), additional features, behind-the-scenes footage, and a collectible set based on the movie. This includes Gandalf’s wand, among other fantasy movie-inspired items.

NFTs are created and hosted by Eluvio on the Ethereum-powered Content Fabric blockchain.

“In this case, Lord of the Rings NFT movie grants the holder a license to watch the film’s footage in the same way they might purchase a BluRay DVD,” Decrypt reported.

The bundles will be available in two different versions, including the Premiere Mystery Edition ($30) and the Premiere Epic Edition ($100). The least expensive package includes 1 of 3 locations from the movie as a themed navigation menu, while the Epic Edition comes with all three.

The Lord of the Rings NFTs are here

The Lord of the Rings NFT can’t be sold, so it basically serves as a home video version with “more experimental and immersive menus” and the aforementioned AR assets, Decrpyt reported. The site can, however, trade The Lord of the Rings NFT as a single package.

The idea is that while Lord of the Rings will still be available for purchase from other digital stores by more traditional means, purchasing the NFT version comes with those extra perks and the asset can be stored in NFT wallets. Additionally, users can purchase Lord of the Rings NFT not only with a credit card but in other forms of cryptocurrency.

Jessica Shell, president of WB Discovery, told Decrypt that this is a test to see if there is interest among consumers to buy an NFT package for a movie. “It would be easy to miss that it’s actually using Web3 or NFTs under the hood, and that’s by design,” Schell said. “We believe the initiative has implications as a potential new way to approach film distribution directly to our fans.”

Schell continued that if Lord of the Rings NFT is successful, he might release more of his films this way or even create his own NFT store.

The WB Movieverse has more details on Lord of the Rings NFT bundles, which will go live October 21 at 9AM PT.
