Most accurate measurements of the universe indicate that something is completely wrong

Researchers have found that the universe is expanding at a completely different rate than previously thought, a groundbreaking discovery that could undermine our current understanding of the universe.

In a new paper published in Astrophysical JournalAn international team of researchers has studied the light emitted by 1,550 different supernovae – some near our Milky Way and others in the most distant regions of the universe millions of light years away – to study the composition and rate of expansion of the universe.

In doing so, their Pantheon+ analysis includes some of the most comprehensive measurements ever taken.

“With these results + Pantheon,” said Dillon Pruitt, co-author and researcher at the Harvard Center for Astrophysics. The Harvard Gazette“We are able to place the most precise constraints on the dynamics and history of the universe to date.”

Surprisingly, their findings support some existing theories regarding dark matter, a mysterious but abundant substance that scientists have not yet directly observed or measured, and dark energy, a hypothetical form of energy that behaves like the opposite of gravity.

Their research posits that the entire universe is made up of roughly two-thirds of dark energy and one-third of matter, the latter of which is mostly made up of dark matter.

We’ve combed through the data, and we can now say with more confidence than ever before how the universe has evolved over the ages and that the current best theories of dark energy and dark matter are powerful.”

But at the same time, the study failed to address one of the biggest discrepancies in the field of astronomy: the Hubble tension, or the apparent mismatch between previous locally measured estimates of the universe’s expansion rate and the measurement derived from the cosmic microwave. The new research indicates that the universe is expanding at about 160,000 miles per hour, while previous measurements that took the cosmic microwave background into account concluded that it was expanding much slower than that.

And while Pantheon+ has confirmed the paradox, it hasn’t provided any answers to it exactly.
