Pokémon GO: How Cosmoem Evolves into Solgaleo and Lunala

The final season in Pokémon GO, The Season of Light, saw a special research mission in action in the form of a “Cosmic Companion”. This quest begins with you earning a Cosmog Pokémon and evolves into an opportunity to evolve it into one of the two Legendary Generation 7, Solgaleo or Lunala.

Unlike regular evolution, Cosmoem has the ability to evolve into any of these Legendaries, so it’s important to know what conditions the evolution must take place under if there’s a particular instance you’re after.

We’ve put together the following guide to let you know the differences in evolution tactics, and what you need to do to ensure your Cosmoem evolves into the Legendary you need.

Pokémon GO – How does Cosmoem evolve into Solgaleo and Lunala

Evolving a Cosmoem into one of its forms is a bit more complicated work than is usually the case with Pokémon evolutions. The important thing in either outcome is to pay close attention to when you’re developing, as daylight hours play an important role in whether you bag Solgaleo or Lunala.

Both evolution outcomes require that you have collected a certain amount of Cosmog Candy before anything can happen. So we first lay out how to get these things into your possession, before breaking down the details of Cosmoem’s evolution into any of its Legendary states.

How to get Cosmog Candy

Cosmog Candy can be very hard to come by and building enough is the biggest challenge in Legendary Evolution. Currently, Candy can be found through three different means: completing quest quests, getting lucky with a rare candy or walking around with Cosmog/Cosmoem as your friend (thanks, Eurogamer).

The first of these methods earns you the most Cosmog in one go. It can be earned by completing Step 8 of the Season of Light quest “Cosmic Companion” which requires you to capture any three Pokémon. Completed rewards will give you 50 Cosmog Candy plus 3000 XP and 1500 Stardust.

Rare Candy is another approach, and useful in a situation like this where Cosmog Candy is relatively hard to come by. Presenting a Pokémon with Rare Candy will turn it into the desired product, but don’t expect it to be readily available – it’s called “Rare” for a reason!

The last way is to set Cosmog / Cosmoem as your friend, for which you will earn candy by walking with them. Again, this is a slow way to get the item, but every little bit helps.

In order to evolve your Cosmoem into Solgaleo, you will need 100 Cosmog Candies and you have to perform the evolution during the day.

Daylight hours in Pokémon GO are based on your local time zone and are reflected on the main map that you can see on the game’s home screen. If the sun is where you are currently, the Pokémon GO map will be green and the Cosmoem evolution icon will have a small Solgaleo silhouette to confirm this.

It should be noted that at the moment you can only perform this evolution once. This means that you should only develop your Cosmoem during the day if you want to get Solgaleo out of it. Failure to do so will mean that you will not be able to evolve your Cosmic Pokémon into Lunala.

Cosmoem’s evolution into Lunala works in the same way as Solgaleo’s evolution but with the opposite effect. The evolution will require 100 Cosmog Candy and must be done at night.

The daytime indicator on the Pokémon GO map is a good sign of the legend your evolution will result in. In the case of Lunala, you would need the map to be in its dark state – to reflect the night setting of local time. The Cosmoem Evolution button will have a silhouette of Lunala during this period for confirmation.

Just like Solgaleo, a Cosmoem can only be evolved once, no matter how many Cosmog Candies you have. If you are keen to ensure that you get Lunala from evolution, it is recommended to check that the game is enjoyed in the night hours as this is the only time the Legendary will be available.
