Silent Hill is secretly great

The Silent Hill video game franchise is finally ready for a true comeback, with a new game set to be announced on Wednesday. This latest revival of the series also means it’s the perfect time to secretly revisit the awesome original the silent Hill Movie. While 2006 horror seekers and video game fans fretted about the fact that the movie didn’t stay true to the source material, a decade of (mostly) bad Silent Hill entries proved just how good the movie really is.

The film follows Rose da Silva (Radha Mitchell) and her husband Christopher (Sean Bean), who are concerned about their daughter, Sharon (Jodel Ferland), and her constant sleepwalking and mumbling around a place called Silent Hill. Eventually, desperately hoping for a solution, Rose takes Sharon and searches for Silent Hill’s answers. The pair soon become trapped in a haunted ghost town – along with a police officer named Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden), who tries to stop them from crossing the city limits and they are pulled by herself. Sharon then disappears, sending the two women on a search for the girl through Silent Hill, where they encounter some of the most famous monsters in the video game series.

While the monsters and bloodsuckers in the movie offer a spooky cinematic journey to the games most famous ghost town, the best part of the silent Hill The film is metaphor at its center. Director Christoph Jans (wolf brothersand screenwriter Roger AvaryPulp FictionCreate a story that grapples with the ways in which men and women can see the world differently, and the way threats against women can go unnoticed by the men around them.

Soon after Rose and Sharon left, Christopher followed suit, realizing they might be headed to Silent Hill. When he arrived, all he found was an empty city. To him, Silent Hill is quiet and uninhabited, but still feels haunted, while for women it is a nightmare full of monsters. The same streets where he sees nothing, they find threats on every corner and roam every alley, within their terrifying dimension he can’t reach. While they remain in mortal danger, something he feels but can’t even see or interact with, he is helpless.

To achieve this, film often turns horror aesthetics into a dime. It expertly transforms from a monster action movie, in which characters desperately escape a new horror (a flock of undead nurses, for example), into a slow-burning, dread-filled drama as Christopher realizes he may not be able to help his wife at all, or as Rose fears than to have lost her daughter in the atrocities of Silent Hill.

None of this is an accurate metaphor, but in a movie that includes monsters like Pyramid Head, it probably shouldn’t be. Nevertheless, it is effective – and still largely lost to audiences when the film came out in 2006, an era dominated by post-war era.saw– The sequel to “torture porn”. Combine that with the fact that the movie was given some creative liberties at a time when the game series was still in its heyday, and it comes as no surprise that this remains one of the hidden video game movie gems.
