Sony Honda Mobility has a (not so secret) weapon to challenge Tesla in the electric vehicle market

Sony Honda Mobility, the electric vehicle joint venture, has significant plans to compete in the growing electric vehicle market. Although JV doesn’t have an EV model to show yet, the partners are already looking for ways to challenge major electric vehicle makers like Tesla by focusing on entertainment, something Sony is known for.

Sony has been teasing its Vision S EV concept for several years as it nears commercial launch. The tech company insisted on high-quality entertainment software that could provide the building blocks of technology such as self-driving.

Meanwhile, Sony’s chief financial officer said the company would not “make batteries or vehicles” itself. Instead, they were focused on partnering with an existing automaker.

In June, Sony and Honda formed a joint venture with the goal of building a new electric vehicle company called (you wouldn’t have guessed it) Sony Honda Mobility.

Although Honda has been relatively late in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market, the automaker has been stepping up its efforts recently. In October, Honda revealed its first mass-market SUV, the Prologue, set to debut in the US in 2024 using GM’s Ultium platform.

The new Sony Honda Mobility JV plans to launch its first EV in 2025, and although there is no brand strategy in place, the company is already looking for ways to leverage its strength to compete with the best.

In a new interview with financial timesSony Honda Mobility leaders explained how JV can leverage Sony’s powerful technology to challenge EV competitors like Tesla.

Sony’s Senior Vice President of AI Robotics Business and COO of Sony’s new business venture, Izumi Kawanishi, explains how adding content and entertainment services to EVs can help them compete, saying:

Sony has entertainment content, services and technologies that move people. We’re adapting these assets to mobility, and that’s our strength against Tesla.

He adds that “Tesla does not provide any content services”, and that the inclusion of the PlayStation 5 in the Sony Honda Mobility EV is “technically possible”.

The leaders of the newly created joint venture insist that the company’s electric vehicles will focus on entertainment, as the new CEO, Yasuhide Mizuno, explains:

We will develop a car as devices that meet the entertainment and network needs that we want to provide.

Take Electric

It’s not surprising to see Sony take advantage of entertainment and content to “upgrade” the driving experience. However, some sort of self-driving capability needs to be included to really take advantage of the entertainment.

To that extent, Kawanishi adds:

To enjoy the space in your car, you have to make it a space where you don’t need to drive. The solution to this is self-driving. Autonomous driving has to evolve significantly from the current level to get to this point, and it will take time for that to happen.

With this in mind, adding Sony Honda Mobility’s entertainment options is one way to gain a competitive edge in the electric vehicle market. However, for the technology to be usable, it will likely need more development time.

Even if you are able to play your favorite video games, if the car is not driving itself, it will only work for passengers or while you are parked.
