The latest DisplayPort specification provides greater alignment with USB Type-C and USB4;

BEAVERTON, Ore. October 17, 2022 – The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®) announced today that it has released DisplayPort 2.1, the latest version of the DisplayPort specification, which is backward compatible and replaces the previous version of DisplayPort (DisplayPort 2.0). VESA works closely with member companies to ensure that DisplayPort 2.0-enabled products will indeed meet the latest and most demanding DisplayPort 2.1 specifications. As a result of this effort, all pre-certified DisplayPort 2.0 products have been certified including those capable of UHBR (Ultra High Bitrate) – whether GPUs, docking station chips, standard benchmark chips, or PHY repeater chips such as reset devices time, or DP40/DP80 cables (including both passive and active, and using full-size DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, or USB Type-C connectors) — have already been certified to the more stringent DisplayPort 2.1 specification.

Achieving a powerful, comprehensive user visual experience remains the highest priority of the VESA DisplayPort specification, whether via a native DisplayPort cable, via DisplayPort Alt Mode (DisplayPort via USB Type-C), or via USB4. As such, DisplayPort 2.1 has tightened its alignment with the USB Type-C specification as well as the USB4 PHY specification to facilitate a common PHY service for both DisplayPort and USB4. In addition, DisplayPort 2.1 has added a new DisplayPort bandwidth management feature to enable DisplayPort tunneling to coexist with other I/O traffic more efficiently over a USB4 link. This increased efficiency comes in addition to mandatory support for VESA’s Display Stream Compression Codec (DSC) and VESA’s onboard replay capability. DSC bitstream support can reduce DisplayPort transmission bandwidth by over 67 percent without visible defects, while VESA onboard replay can reduce DisplayPort tunneling packet bandwidth by over 99 percent when a restart is performed Board.

The advanced capabilities of the DisplayPort video interface are enabled by the invaluable contributions of more than 300 member companies from across the electronics ecosystem.”

DisplayPort 2.1 has also updated the DisplayPort cable specification to provide more power and improvements to full-size DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort cable configurations that allow for improved connectivity and longer cable lengths (over two meters for DP40 cables and over one meter for DP80 cables) without reducing UHBR performance. VESA-certified DP40 cables support up to a UHBR10 (10 Gbps) link rate, with four lanes, providing a maximum throughput of up to 40 Gbps, while VESA-certified DP80 cables support up to a UHBR20 (20 Gbps) link rate Gigabits per second), with four lanes, providing a maximum speed of 80 Gbps.
