Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and while many take it as a signal to focus on your Christmas shopping and prepare for the next major holiday, perhaps you should instead slow down and appreciate Thanksgiving. Many of us have certain movies that we enjoy watching on Halloween and Christmas, but when it comes to Thanksgiving, many don’t have a movie or block of movies that they have to watch every year, but maybe this year you should just prop your feet up and enjoy some good costume movies about Thanksgiving with Holiday approaching. Here is a list of some of the movies that everyone should watch to get into the holiday mood.
Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
With many of the movies on this list forgotten or not considered Thanksgiving movies, let’s start with the most obvious and classic, “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” If this movie doesn’t make you feel festive and enjoy this time of year, then you don’t deserve to eat any of the delicious treats every family should watch or at least keep in the background for the holidays.
burglary on a tower;
While it may not be your family’s traditional Thanksgiving movie, Tower Heist really is a Thanksgiving movie. The holiday heist takes place during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, and if you haven’t seen it before, the cast for this movie is fantastic, with the likes of Ben Stiller, Casey Affleck, Eddie Murphy, and Matthew Broderick.
Maybe you have a house full of kids at the holiday and they are looking for something fun and interesting that the little ones can enjoy. There’s no better Thanksgiving movie for kids than Freebirds. Adults will enjoy it too, but this is more about fun for the whole family than anything else.
Meet the parents
While it may not technically be a Thanksgiving movie like others on this list, or even another in the series, “Meet The Parents” has a Thanksgiving feel to it. The movie takes place in the fall and with the weather in the movies and costumes, it gives us a fun family movie to watch on the holidays, and many people meet the parents for the first time in the holidays, so it seems appropriate.
Unlike “Meet The Parents”, “Meet The Fockers” takes place on Thanksgiving. There’s a scene where the turkey gets cut wrong, and even though it’s only one scene, you could say it’s a Thanksgiving movie. You can watch the entire trilogy build up to the holiday, but if you want a strict stick to Thanksgiving movies the whole family can enjoy, this is the movie you’ll want to watch and enjoy. Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro have great chemistry in these movies.
son in law
Anyone who grew up in the ’90s had some kind of feeling about Polly Shore. You hated it, loved it, made you laugh, or pissed you off, but it was everywhere in the ’90s. One of the best movies he was in was ‘Son In Law’ which is a movie that many have watched but forget is even there until someone mentions it. It’s a fun movie about Thanksgiving and there are many memorable lines and scenes from it as well. If you haven’t seen him in a while, this is the time of year to remember the ’90s and the days of Pauly Shore.
Planes, trains and cars
If you need a movie to make the family laugh and stave off a bad holiday mood, put Planes, Trains, and Cars on, because it’s impossible not to have a family laugh at this classic comedy. Steve Martin and John Candy are at their best as Martin’s character tries to get home for Thanksgiving, but finds himself spending days with Candy. It’s a fun and lighthearted movie, and it’s the perfect movie to watch on Thanksgiving.
Unlike the others on this list, “Prisoners” isn’t your typical happy family Thanksgiving movie. It’s a dark thriller that will unnerve many parents, but Hugh Jackman’s performance is amazing throughout. For those looking for a good but darker movie, be sure to check out Prisoners this holiday season, and use it as a reminder to watch your kids if they play outside over the long weekend.
the new World
This movie may not be for the whole family, but it marks the first Thanksgiving more accurately than any other. With a great cast of Colin Ferrell, Christian Bale, and Christopher Plummer, the acting in this movie is incredible, but it’s an even more serious and brutal movie to watch. The movie “The New World” will make you thankful for all the peace in your life, not the chaos in the movie.
Instead of a live-action version of Pocahontas, pop into Disney’s animated version for a light-hearted movie in which adults sing along and reminisce about their childhoods, while introducing a younger generation to a movie many of us grew up with. Honestly, when was the last time you saw this? Thanksgiving seems like the perfect time to dress up and enjoy the classics.
While Halloween and Christmas movies get more love and attention, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some good movies to watch and get you in the Thanksgiving mood. Watch any of the above as the holiday approaches, or even on the holiday itself. Perhaps there is another movie that you and your family would prefer, but if you need a break from the stress that comes with the holidays, put on a movie and relax, there are many good options.
